What are Your Glutes Doing? – Crystal Lake
What are Your Glutes Doing?
Did you know if you spend time sitting, like most of us do, your glutes are not only slacking, but are being inhibited and your hip flexors are becoming tighter? It’s true, our body is continuously being molded and casted to its surroundings. This creates poor movement patterns as the glutes will not be activated or “working” as they should. The tricky part about this, is that unless you’re a high level athlete or just someone with extremely high self awareness, you will not know this is happening. Poor movement patterns lead to chronic issues.
Although it is tricky to self assess, more likely than not if you are someone who sits at work, or even commutes in the car to work, this is you. You can also check the flexibility of your hamstrings, as often tight hamstrings will be seen with poor glute activation.
Some other things your glutes do is stabilize your pelvis and low back, which is the foundation of your spine and body. They also provide strength and explosiveness in any movement where the hip “hinges,” yeah I’m looking at you squats… or dead lifts, Olympic lifting, jumping, lunges, or even getting up from a seated position.
