3 FAQS ABOUT BONE HEALTH, BONE LOSS AND CHIROPRACTIC IN CRYSTAL LAKE
3 FAQs about Bone Health, Bone Loss And Chiropractic in Crystal Lake
You need your bones! If you’re concerned about bone density loss, we absolutely understand; the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis has been growing. Did you know chiropractic is a wonderful way to keep your bones and joints both strong and healthy throughout your long, active life?
The National Center for Health Statistics reported “In the United States in 2010, an estimated 10.2 million people aged 50 and over had osteoporosis and about 43.3 million more people had low bone mass.”
There’s also a growing number who have degeneration in their joints, aging their bones prematurely and creating dysfunction and dis-ease. In the United States, 1 in 4 adults has arthritis (CDC, 2020).
Let’s answer some questions and give you some information on how your bones can live their best life.
If I have bone loss or osteoporosis, can I go to a chiropractor?
Yes, in most cases, you can get a chiropractic adjustment! The irregular shape of the vertebrae means that they are some of the most biomechanically strong bones in the body.
After carefully scanning and evaluating your spine, Dr. Josh and Dr. Emily can adjust you with the correct level of force for you. Our adjustments are adapted for the person and what’s best for you! We have many techniques and even an activator tool for gentle adjustments.
The first step and best way to answer this, is of course to evaluate you on-person.
How can I be proactive about my bone health?
Getting adjusted is one of the best things you can do for spinal hygiene, improving nerve and blood flow. An adjustment removes the restrictions, subluxations and misalignments so everything can function optimally!
In addition, making sure that the joint can move as intended prevents degeneration and osteoarthritis in that joint.
In the last couple of years, we’ve seen more “tech neck” also known as forward head posture. Working and learning on laptops and cellphones doesn’t always allow for good upright posture.
When there are changes in alignments, you change the biomechanics of weight-bearing movemnts. This doesn’t allow joints to move optimally.
This can cause a lot of stress in the spine, leading to subluxations and dysfunction in the central nervous system! A study in the October 2004 Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that forward head posture was linked to an increased risk of heart disease.
Regular chiropractic care can help to reset your posture, but more importantly, removes that nerve pressure.
At what age should I start chiropractic care for bone health?
Birth can be one of the first traumas to a baby’s spine, so we recommend that you and your family be checked for misalignments ASAP. No one is too young - or too old - to have interference removed from their nervous system.
If you have been experiencing bone loss or joint degeneration, it’s even more important to start now.
A guy in his 30s came in to be adjusted after being told by other healthcare professionals that he had “the neck of an 80-year-old.”
While we don’t necessarily agree with that assessment, we do see too much premature wear-and-tear, osteoarthritis, and degeneration because of subluxations. Think about a wooden door that isn’t aligned. The friction of trying to close it eventually wears away that part of the frame. We see this on car tires that have uneven wear because of misalignment too.
In our bodies, this misalignment is even worse because it isn’t just about the bones, but the nerves! Our peripheral nervous system connects to the spinal cord from small spaces between vertebrae. Pressure cuts off the supply of life-giving information, like a rubber band that’s too tight on your finger.
Chiropractic care brings movement back to the joint, realigns it, and removes that inference from the nerves!
